Requiem is using his home server for Waronline, I'd guess he doesn't notice it is off immediately.

I have started to follow US-politics again since the start of the new year due to the election coming up and personal interest. Thought this was somehow interesting and worth to talk about.

Viva,
one of the most successful enterprises has been the United States Post Office which has employed over 500,000 employees in the past and has only recently run into some difficulties due to the poor economy.
The mandate of the post office has been to provide mail service for the US citizens while maintaining complete independence of government financial assistance and it has done that for over 200 years (i.e. whether financial assistance has been given for their most recent dilemna, I don't know, but I do know that a plan to self-cure their problems has been implemented).

In my humble opinion such entities are needed (i.e. imho our government should kickstart government owned fuel service stations, mining, power and even steel entities all with a similar mandate) to compete with private enterprise while providing jobs during difficult times.
My political position is that of a centrist and imho the antics of our republican party have been a disgrace ... they've practically admitted that they have one goal (i.e. to get Obama out of the White House) and they've done nothing at all to help Obama while tax-payers pay their salaries.

PS:
Thank God that Obama is a genius and has managed to get the US economy up and running again without their help.

Well you have that in some European Countries like in France, part of the Energy and Banking sector are government owned. It could be good, the threats are less competition on the market and so higher prices and corruption. But if you keep an eye on that it works.
Well the economy is running because the central banks are pumping money in the market like crazy. Plus the countries are spending like crazy. In Europe we have the financial crisis now and if all the money that is on the market kicks in we will have an inflation if it gets really bad a hyperinflation. And then it only takes a small time till the middle class looses their money and riots will start all over Europe and if Europe falls the rest of the world will fall like dominoes.
I am a bigger Fan of Obama then of Romney though.

For example I have been to Barcelona, Spain lately for quite some time. The unemployment rate for young ppl under 30 is around 30% and in other parts of Spain it is even worse. As I am around that age and I have friends there plus met ppl there I got a bit of an idea of the state of mind they are in and some of them are ready to throw our current system over. Because they stopped believing in it. In Germany we are not at a point like that yet, but if things progress as they are it is probably a matter of time.

The biggest problem with capitalism is that it needs constant growth to work. Constant growth however, is impossible. Sooner or later you run out of resources. This is why from time to time the bubble bursts and the market is devalued.
As everything goes ever faster these bursts will come more frequent.
We need to find new ways of sharing and distributing what resources we have.

Do you think we should get involved supporting the Syrian rebels?
Is a theocratic democracy or democratic theocracy (i.e. however it's termed) acceptable to us?

Don't you have a such in the US? I always hear the president and others end of speeches with "god bless america" or something in that way. True it's a mild form of teocracy but it seems God play a big part in US politics

No Lod,
we aren't a theocracy ...
we do on very rare occassions have a nut commit something like a bombing in the name of religion once every hundred years or so, but how you can compare us to the antics of the Sunni, the Shia and the Baath party bombing each other on a monthly/weekly basis maiming even children is beyond me.

In my mind these people are guilty on both ends, equally committing atrocities and if we start supplying the Sunni rebels, we'll just succeed to stoke the fires of unending bloodshed with it getting on our hands ...
we aren't going to buck up against Russia and China by getting directly involved like in Libya, so we should just butt out imho.

PS:
In our democracy everyone has rights including religious folks as stated in the first amendment of the bill of rights:
"en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.""

In those first two clauses it's basicly stated that religion can't be allowed to run the government, but the government can't be allowed to run the various religions either.
