| Posted : Friday, 23 January 2015 - 19:26 One of the most alarming issues connected to global warming is that the oceans are absorbing a lot of the excess carbon dioxide that humans are spewing endlessly into the atmosphere. This creates an acid called Carbonic Acid which dissolves exoskeletons made of calcium on shells and coral especially. This leads to the death of coral reefs (they are vanishing very quickly) and with them, all of the myriad creatures that make coral reefs their homes. Not to mention the problems of coastlines that have been protected by reefs getting washed away now. It also effects sea plants that use calcium in their fronds.
It's just one of the very many changes we are wreaking on the planet and is one of the scariest, too, since we rely on the oceans to be alive, not dead hellholes. Please tell your representatives that global warming is a direct danger to your family and you want him/her to legislate against carbon dumping processes like burning coal to make electricity, using gasoline to power cars and so on. Thank you! Your grandchildren won't hate you so much if you start changing now.

| Posted : Saturday, 24 January 2015 - 20:11 You dispute that carbon dioxide, when dissolved in water creates carbonic acid? It's a pretty well known fact. Now, as to the acidification of the oceans rising and wiping out coral reefs, www.pmel.noaa.gov/co2/story/Ocean+Acidification That ought to be authoritative enough for anyone. If not, well, you're pretty much on your own.
It's a horrible problem and isn't being addressed much yet by the world community. | | TaurusRex Joined 14/06/2002 Posts : 9462

| Posted : Thursday, 29 January 2015 - 01:51 *"Climate change"* happens all the time ... we used to call it *"Mother Nature"*;
But if you want us to worry about possible apocalyptic disasters, it seems to me that an eruption at Yellowstone which they claim is 40000 years over due
Or an asteroid which may hit us in 2039 are where we should be putting our research money to prevent or to at least contain them to prevent our extinction.

| Posted : Thursday, 29 January 2015 - 15:30 I will continue to "worry" about actual stuff that is happening right now, not speculative disasters that may or may not ever happen, most likely not in our lifetimes, anyhow.
The ocean is dying, the forests are being cut down, the fish are nearly gone, all large animals live only at human discretion, the bees are dying off, the food is genetically modified to produce pesticides, the water is almost gone from the huge aquifers that make mass mono agriculture possible in the grain belt, the ice caps are melting, the glaciers are all nearly gone, the coral reefs are dying due to ocean acidification, the governments of the world are totally owned by capitalist corporations who will do nothing to stop any of this abuse and our government has been taken over by anti-science non-intellectual tools of wealth.
An asteroid isn't really something I have time to worry about, the world is just about to end as we know it and it need s radical changes if we are to survive. People who can't process this information wish to hide behind walls of falsehood and continue as they have been doing, which is what brought this catastrophe on us in the first place.
Young people, read as much as you can about the eco-system, you'll desperately need to know this stuff as the world goes wild and the water wars begin.

| Posted : Wednesday, 18 February 2015 - 20:19 I like to prod TR about it occasionally just to hear his new brainstorm, which is always the same old brainstorm.
However, miscreants like yourself who ONLY stop in to make a comment about what ACTIVE players are doing, well, it just isn't done, old chap. Pip pip. | | shadowwalker Joined 1/01/2004 Posts : 594
