| Posted : Wednesday, 22 May 2013 - 18:12 I got to meet a group of Australian cartoonists on Saturday here in Seattle. They were on a book tour of their works, through Canada and the US. Here's a link to the site of one of them, apparently one of the top, best known cartoonists in Australia. They all hailed from Melbourne, two men and three women, all very skilled and funny, too! Ah, the Australian women seem very down to earth and not so easily offended as American women, but hey, what do I know?

| Posted : Wednesday, 22 May 2013 - 23:24 Yes cars being burnt and window smashing mostly. People are not happy in suburbia. Saying police are harrassing them. A 69 yr old was shot dead last week, by the police, in the place where it started. Unemployment is around 30% among 20-25 yr olds there. Social services have moved out like post offices, banks and such. The situation is much the same as it was in France some years ago. Conservative government lower taxes and saves on services for the citizens. That will cause problems sooner or later. Segregation is a bad thing for us all and one of the reasons why capitalism is doomed to fail. | | TaurusRex Joined 14/06/2002 Posts : 9462

| Posted : Thursday, 23 May 2013 - 02:50 OMG, Lod...blame it on capitalism....right, keep taxing and handing out benefits...that's the way to solve all problems, right? Problem is you run out of 'other people's' money when the time comes that the productive citizens decide to stop taking care of those that wish to sit around and wait for their benefits. | | LOD Joined 13/12/2001 Posts : 5703
| Posted : Thursday, 23 May 2013 - 05:55 Capitalism is a system that builds on perpetual growth and ever higher revenues to work. That is a mathematical impossibillity, nothing can grow forever. It is not about benefits, it's about giving people a chance to participate in production. When there no longer are any jobs around, nothing that needs to be done, people feel unwanted, marginalized, not a part of society. When this group grow big enough and begin to organize we will see a lot worse violence than window smashing and car burnings.

| Posted : Thursday, 23 May 2013 - 07:04 LOD, not exactly ... there's the matter of supply and demand, production and consumption which are potentially like perpetual motion machines.
PS: Not to change the subject, but shouldn't our federal government sell expensive, limited coverage homeowners insurance if we're going to get stuck with the tab anyway? Believe me, I feel terrible for the folks in Oklahoma, but too many of our population take up residence where they can't get insurance.

| Posted : Thursday, 23 May 2013 - 07:33 The demands may grow but the supply can't keep up. That is the problem. There is a much bigger demand for jobs than there is a supply. It is also an accelerating phenomena. As innovationa technichs move forward ever less human hands will be needed in the production. Before long factories will run without humans in there at all. Cars will not be driven by humans nor will trains and aircraft. That is the reality and we need to adjust society to handle that situation. | Posted : Thursday, 23 May 2013 - 07:39 TR, There is a Federal Insurance program, for people that build in extremely high risk areas that would require a very high premium if purchased from an insurance company, so in reality, it's not available because no company wants the risk.
So, those of us that may never ever earn enough income to consider building on the side of a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean or can't afford the price for a lot and home on a breaker island along the coast have our tax money subsidize their insurance coverage and protects Mr or Mrs 'far richer than us' so if they experience a hurricane or natural disaster, their luxury home gets replaced. Great Idea, huh?
EDIT: IMO, you've got the money and desire to have that multi-story beach home, then YOU accept the risks....don't come looking to Mr & Mrs 'hard working' Joe to fund the replacement of your BMW, boat and beach home....and by the way, that applies just the same to those that build a cabin on the Mississippi or either other river/flood plain and then goes looking for a FEMA check when it gets flooded. | Posted : Thursday, 23 May 2013 - 07:54 Whatta u know... Just hitting the news...evidently a British soldier was just beheaded (hacked to death) on a London street by another peace loving muslim...
Guess the Brits weren't providing him a job and benefits, huh?
The guy (with visible blood on his hands) was proclaiming how the women is 'his' country have to see this...shouting allah akbar as he killed the guy...
Another example of successful immigration or student visas...a better example of justice appears to have happened here last night...Orlando police or FBI killed a guy over by Universal that was connected to the Boston bombers when he attacked them during questioning. All: I think people need to build appropriately for their environment. In Oklahoma, they should build mostly underground, with houses that can take a 250 mph wind, built sloping, like a tank.
Europe and it's Muslim population will be parted at some point in the next 20 years, too much tension between western and eastern minds and religions to accept each other permanently. Sad but true. Lots of deaths before they part ways, I fear. Once again, religion is the main factor in the misery of humans. Too bad weak people need comforting like that, if they accepted the world as a place to live instead of a place to "get through" we might all be living better lives. Ain't gonna happen. Bang bang. |
