I agree with harold. Ocarina are usually ceramic, all wood instruments where at one point living. I don't think its at all a stretch with that one.

"The alphorn is carved from solid softwood, generally spruce but sometimes pine." Wiki

I think anything generally constructed from wood is out. The main purpose of the question has been to rule out wood made instruments.

I think you are taking the living thing too literal. The instrument itself was never alive. I think the next guess should be Princess. I'm waiting for it.

:/ we've always used it in the past to delineate whether it was made of wood or other materials like that... when did it become a useless query @.@

In this instance i think Mog has said it was not alive because it is a small part of a living thing, I think that to ask if it was `organic` may of helped more, but its too late for that,

Not a painter's tool.

9th question?
..and sorry, I don't use that definition of alive. If it was a whole plant or animal or human I would say yes, but otherwise, just too many things contain organic material for that to be a useful description. Beating a dead horse there, and yes, a dead horse would be considered to have been alive. Not the glue from its hooves however.`

things i know it cant be are ,

anything brass
panpipes
flutes
it has no valves or levers to change the notes

I have just had one of those moments of daftness i am prone to........

Any thoughts on wind chimes?( not a question to you,Mr Great hairy sofa scratcher)

just a couple of things
Mog when are you going to answer lothars question on the last page?
Harold, wind chimes are not on lothars link (mog say this item is on his link but not on mine) and also I think they would be percussion as they make a noise when contact each other.

Yeah Moggie, when are you gonna answer the question. Uh uh, when are ya? Can't you guys just see a Alphorn leaning in the corner of Mog's living room. I'm sure he could come up with some very interesting uses for such a large air chamber. <6?()

Sorry, I guess your question got lost in all this messing around. It is not a brass instrument. I thought I made it pretty plain it wasn't generally made of metal, so why would you ask about an instrument that is ALWAYS made of metal???????? But, so be it, no.

By the way, I didn't say it was made of organic materials, I merely defined what I meant by "living thing". It wasn't once a living thing, ok?

20th question?

Ok Mr hippy man a final guess.
My thinking is that this item was traditionally made of clay and is now sometimes made of metal.
I done a google search on "wind instruments made of clay" with only one solid response the "Ocarina"
so this is my final guess is it a Ocarina?
If anyone objects let me know asap and I will remove this post before Mog sees it lol
