| Posted : Wednesday, 13 January 2010 - 14:19 Well you asked this question to which Mog replied Yes.
Are the notes controlled by using the fingers only? ie there are no mechanical levers or valves
I would assume that the only way for the notes to be controlled as you describe is with holes. | | Crimsondawn Joined 12/06/2007 Posts : 1240
| Posted : Wednesday, 13 January 2010 - 16:13 There are instruments, blow out one end and u cover the other with your hand, different hand positions creat different tones. | | Lothar Joined 2/08/2009 Posts : 433

| Posted : Wednesday, 13 January 2010 - 19:10 Crimson I see what your saying about transverse but I don't think the Ocarina is a transverse instrument and after spending an hour going through Lothar's site I really can't see anything else that fits the description which we have. Before making a guess on the Ocarina, what do you think? | | Lothar Joined 2/08/2009 Posts : 433
| Posted : Wednesday, 13 January 2010 - 19:15 I am a little confused in that you asked if it was in the flute family and Mog said not transverse. There are quite a few diff types of instruments classified as flutes on that site that are not transverse but end blown. I thought about asking that question. But I think it could be an Alphorn or some other similar brass catergory instrument. Last Edited : Wednesday, 13 January 2010 - 19:17 | Princess in the Shadows Joined 14/11/2008 Posts : 510
| Posted : Wednesday, 13 January 2010 - 19:43 We have two questions left which one of them will be answered to Lothar's question "Is it considered a brass instrument?" I think if the answer is "No" it could be the Ocarina, if the answer is "Yes" I think it would be some sort of brass horn instrument. I did think it could have been the bugle as traditionally the bugle was made of horn but as we know now it isn't, but what persuaded me against the bugle is the fact that it is played with one hand. This needs to be taken into account as it was stated by Mog that it is held with both hands where most horn type instruments are not held by both hands. I'll stop here before I write a novel. As I could rant about this all day and I don't want to bore you all and Dad expects me to do some work. Cheers Angie | | Harold1 DoCJoined 21/04/2007 Posts : 1977
