My point being, YES, it is blindsiding - but with scouts and ballista involved - it's all the more likely to happen |

Unless you play a bit differently than that CTD? So while yes more likely to happen with scouts (or ballis at range 9), it doesn't signicantly increase of the odds of pulling it off. Last Edited : Thursday, 4 March 2004 - 23:07 | Lonestorm Joined 30/01/2003 Posts : 606

| Posted : Thursday, 4 March 2004 - 23:34 There's another issue. Between spending troops on scouting, and what you use for active combat. -THAT- is why I typically rely on outposts, so I don't expend any precious troop production
And if someone keeps poking these little parties out, there's nothing to say you can't pull a prolonged skirmish and perpetually pick them off. Eventually leading to the guy getting cheesed and making some critical mistake that DOES let you charge
Just because your opponent is aware of what you're up to, doesn't make him any more able to stop you
It might make your job a little trickier - certainly - but not impossible
Calling in fences...well, now we're on catapults and siege

| Posted : Friday, 5 March 2004 - 00:36 Yes Lonestorm - the only reason the fence went up was because I knew what the potential threat was (course I also lost more than 5 pop in covering that scouting expidition ) - and knew I didn't have enough melee to cover all the sides.

Actually I find that makes all the difference. Sure I'd prefer an outpost over a 5 pop when resources, comms in the area, etc allow. But the hardest attack to counter is the one you never see coming - and as such that attack will do far more damage to you than losing a 5 pop will. I'll sacrafice 200 scouts (in 5 pop stacks) any day to have the necessary information to know where to strike or when to flee. The loss of scouts is more than made up for in dealing damage where your enemy is weak and minimizing damage where your enemy is strong. e.g., in the current topic at hand of getting your ranged blindsided, you get to move your ranged units to a more defensible position before the attack comes (or not move into a vulnerable position to begin with). | | CTDXXX Joined 19/11/2001 Posts : 5842
| Posted : Friday, 5 March 2004 - 02:03 Depends on the tactic. Obviosuly an ambush from all sides is not gonna work if the guy sees you shuffling into position. Then again, this isn't necessarily a simple case of scouting. This is a case of draining your opponent of what he has. And if I killed your 200 scouts, and THEN we had the inevitable crash in the middle...well...just because you know about it - doesn't help does it?
I'm sure you could just as simply say that it's a case of knowing soon enough what the other plan is...
Point being, it's not as cut-and-dried as you make out. I've lost battles on just the sort of expenditures you describe. Other times it matters not a jot | | prancer Joined 14/10/2003 Posts : 493
