| Posted : Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - 15:25 HC are the kings of battle - no effective rock type troop to counter them - getting first strikes on them with the Knights (that take no retal) is very difficult, and then they don''t destroy the HC so the Paper type troop Knight is a sitting duck for an onslaught by the opponent on his next turn.
My only effective alternative for you is to hit an open HC with a scout and then blast him with Falcs - they shed HC more effectively then anything - OR MACE after scout, but then you have the same problem of retaliation by the remaining HC or other HC within movement range.
I am leaning towards HC with a strong mix thereafter in battles - my goal is to figure out the HC to Falc ratio that works. Clearly you have to worry about your other troops being milked off while you deal with an opponent''s HC threat, so why not figure out the best troop mix that would equate to fighting ''fire with fire'' - or in other words, fighting with the best set up to fight the same type of troops that the most effective opponents have.
I usually screen shot the good opponent''s troop configuration for later look. (only takes a minute to do).
I agree with Biodus though - a good ranged mix can whittle down the HC eventually, but you still have to have HC to fight HC in that instance, IMHO - as a good strategist will either punch through and get to your ranged or figure out a way to expose your other troops to his ranged and milk you that way.

| Posted : Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - 19:30 Mace counter HC very well in battle - you get more of them, so the constant retal works in your favor. But if your opponent shows up with Knights instead of HC, yer hosed. | | Jmacattack Joined 12/02/2007 Posts : 658
| Posted : Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - 20:06 Once again, in my ever so humble opinion - Mace are a good supplemental troop, but be willing to take less of them - as you should be supplementing HC and Knights, and should probably go squires, pike and at least expert ranged from there.
All opinion- based soley on previous effectiveness.

| Posted : Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - 20:13 Yep did it once so far. But its damn hard.
6K Custom. I took Battering Rams, Marksmen, Ballis, a few Knights and Mace. Oh and 2 units of Comms of course. They only had 4HC, they hit my rams, failed to kill even 1 stack (he left them all on 1 pop at 4-6 health. lol.) Then I killed all the HC in one turn... only just mind you...
But trying these things against better players I found its really really hard. If they are clever at least 1 unit of HC will survive and smash right through you.
Depends a lot on the players and the respective skills. | | Mog DoCJoined 5/02/2004 Posts : 14358
| Posted : Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - 23:51 I have beaten HC setups using mace and marks, or battering rams and marks, but you have to have a great place to park them. Open field maps are no good for that. In general, a good balance of types is the overall, long term winner. Biodus was using a strategy that gained him a wad of points with 2 HC and some Knights in 6k games. It was brutal. So, HC aren''t a cure-all, and ALL HC just won''t win. I love to see 8 HC coming, they can never beat a good balanced group that includes ranged. | | Harold1 DoCJoined 21/04/2007 Posts : 1977

| Posted : Thursday, 18 October 2007 - 20:26 Yeah a few HC with good ranged support and some ablative units works really well. HC can smash through quite a lot. If your against a good opponent who has HC and you have none its a damn hard game just to survive.
