| Posted : Tuesday, 31 August 2004 - 18:15 Depends on what my plan is for the game really. If I DO want to go for macemen early, I usually get them on turn 3. If my plan is different, obviously, I won't have macemen on turn 3. | | cardfan_stl Joined 25/10/2003 Posts : 855
| Posted : Tuesday, 31 August 2004 - 22:14 Your econ isn't screwed by getting mace that early... You just can't deploy all of your troops at first...
If you don't plan on attacking someone soon it's quite possible...

| Posted : Tuesday, 31 August 2004 - 22:52 to ge them out by 3 turns, you also cant use your comms to repair/takeover buildings, your main troops are busy taking over your first resources and cant gain the stacks of ore/gold/wood/stone/gems it slows intake of wealth, and for what? macemen a few turns early? an extra 30 macemen? thats not gonna change much in the game. Honestly would be foolish to pull macemen out before turn 6 or 7 in my oppinion, focus on developing your economy and getting Resources. | | Sage DoCJoined 8/11/2002 Posts : 4070

You can do so many things in those first three turns, there's no need to trade off ANYTHING. You can have a strong economy AND a strong military at the same time | | DoRW Empirez Joined 17/09/2001 Posts : 1521
| Posted : Tuesday, 31 August 2004 - 23:03 well ... i just wonder what your giving up to buy tech to get macemen up and running....
and honestly what advantage is getting out those macemen early? at turn 3 you cant afford advanced/expert training.... so your producing like.... 4 a turn from the barracks your upgrading....
so at turn 3 or turn 7, do you really think the slow down from bringing them out at 3 (instead of investing in other techs that help your economy, or personally id get advanced/expert training on both my barracks before i even worry about building a 3rd. the numbers if you run them, getting advanced/expert training on 2 barracks gives you MORE troops than a third barracks would) plus at turn 3-7 you would get 16 macemen.... but you would damage the development of your economy, stall the production of your troops that could be getting supplys, which is what opening troops are for. Commandeers would be bogged down building buildings, NOT repairing your buildings to get that extra 20% on your income, and ALSO you cant spend cash to upgrade your mines, which costs you 50 of each basic item, and 250 gold per turn...
YOu getting the macemen out at turn 3 is possible but NOT advised, turn 7 or 8 would be more recomended 16 macemen is not a good trade off for 300 metal/wood/stone 1400 gold loss youd take in just your basic resources. the start up needs to be a economy based one,
advanced gold expert gold thats 2000 gold that you want to get done asap, turn 1 and 2 if you can.

| Posted : Tuesday, 31 August 2004 - 23:09 its cool, just i know your a better player than that. unless your tryin to show off theres really no point in geting macemen before turn 7ish...it only hurts in my oppinion.

| Posted : Wednesday, 1 September 2004 - 11:32 Well, I usually get my 3rd barracks at turn 3, without hurting my economy any (at least in my view). You just focus on getting all the gold piles quick as well as the gold mine on turn 1. Let's face it, early gold matters much more than the other resources, so I don't mind if I lose a turn or so worth of my stone quarry for example. I usually have some gold left over to research archery or advanced training or something like this...
So, if I REALLY wanted macemen, I could probably get them at turn 3, but not my 3rd barracks etc.
The difference is whether you upgrade your resource buildings... I guess this is what you mean by hurting your economy. I don't see it that way though. I see it as helping your troop production.
If you don't think you're gonna have to fight for a while, then you can upgrade your resource buildings early... But if someone attacks you early you can get caught with your pants down...

| Posted : Wednesday, 1 September 2004 - 12:04 card you might wanna relook at your strat, what good is getting your third barracks before you purchase advanced/expert training on your other two barracks.
getting advanced/expert training on your first 2 barracks gives you MORE troops per turn than having 3 barracks with evenonly advanced trainning, hence you should get advanced/expert training before building another barracks, you get MORE troops. | | Fanatic Joined 12/01/2003 Posts : 1148
| Posted : Wednesday, 1 September 2004 - 12:13 Redo the numbers DoRW .
If you are looking strictly at troop output the order of getting the 3rd barracks/advanced training does not matter. Expert training in this case should only be obtained after you have 3 barracks going (again assuming your only interest is absolute troop production numbers).
e.g. 3 barracks will produce 36 scouts per turn (12 per barracks) 2 barracks with advanced training will produce 36 scouts per turn (18 per barracks) 3 barracks with advanced training will produce 54 scouts per turn (18 per barracks) 2 barracks with advanced and expert training will produce 48 scouts per turn (24 per barracks)
Personally if I were to go straight for macemen - I would tech up the barracks to expert troops, then immediately follow up with advanced training and then expert training on that barracks. While one could get mace producing at turn 3, I agree with DoRW in that you cripple your economy to much by doing so. You are better off long term waiting a few more turns, giving yourself a better economic footing and foregoing the extra 10-15 mace you would have produced in that time. | | cardfan_stl Joined 25/10/2003 Posts : 855
| Posted : Wednesday, 1 September 2004 - 16:34 Fanatic's right.
3 barracks with no training = 2 barracks with advanced.
And in this situation 3 barracks is better because you can have more diversified troops.
If I'm going for absoulte troop production I prefer going: 3 barracks THEN advanced training
But I usually get the two pretty close together...
