Much like many RTS games, what you build, what terrain you are on, where you build it, and what you do with it are all of equal importance. You need to manage your finacial resources, but also your empires layout and defensive capablilities, and of course your offensive strategies.
The Speed of a game is defined by how often a turn occurs.
Games that show 12-hrs as the speed means that there is a new turn every 12hrs.
Movement Points represent how many squares your army can move in 1 Turn.
eg, with only 6/10 Movement Points, 10 showing the maximum per turn, an army can move 6 squares in distance.
Battle & Movement Points fully regenerate every turn regardless of army sizes or levels.
