right i find smaller stacks r better but people tend to go for larger bigger stacks. What i mean its better to have lots of smaller stacks of say 20 than one massive stack. It allows u to have a much better stratagy monavability, gives ut he appearance of more men and allows u to surround one single unit use on unit to soak damage and then attack with each in turn wile he cant defend allowing u to smash him to bits!!!!

um...no. It doesn't work that way. The big stack would absorb and destroy 3 or 4 of your small stacks before its retal power ran out.

I picture Linkasy cruising through the "maze-map" with this hoard of little armies and running into a huge enemy Ballista...

All those bloodspots...

not having all of your troops in one stack does help, tactically. But really the max damage cap is a good place to stop in regular campaigns. (smaller stacks earlier).

The problem if you make your stacks too small is that they won't be able to reach the enemy's troops as well as their troops can reach yours.

That is, if you're fighting in an area where both of you can get 5 armies up to attack at once, the guy with 5-10 good sized stacks will have a quite significant advantage over the guy with 10-20 smaller stacks.

If however, someone has only a few monster stacks, they are much easier to ZOC off and handle with ranged or however you want to.

Of course in skirmish games, it becomes much harder to handle the monster stacks.

How many military academies do you want to be building? This uses up valuable resources and comm time.

I might support SLIGHTLY smaller stacks...but I can't realistically see how I could win anything with greatly reduced stacks in swarms...

I didn't even say why yet
The only reason I'd make them slightly smaller, is to milk bonuses, as I suspect most of the hardcore players know already
With lots of small stacks, you'd be hard-pressed to gte them all into action before large numbers of your stack start dropping like flies

It's just not viable, really...

Ok, it's viable if you like sending your troops in a nice stream, like so many AI in so many TBS and RTS games

For the rest of us though, or for those of us who DON'T want to slave just to make it reap average rewards....I don't see how this can happen, yet

You COULD spilt your forces that way and attack from multiple angles....but the way WOL is set-up, there's normally only one viable area to REALLY attack - the castle - and the force you need to take it out is huge even if you DO take your entire army

Try me.
I will explain to you why it isn't enough
While few vets would now consider me even half-lethal, most know I have a decent knowledge of the game, and my butt-kickings are largely through bad implementation and not bad planning

So...try me
