Lately I've been seeing more and more people using masive amounts of basic type troops late into the game. I have always wondered why these people would do such a thing? And then I thought about the current game settings. +1 barracks and 1k gold per castle. If a person took his 1st 3 barracks and trains nothing but scouts with all training tech he would be producing 72 scouts per turn. And with each scout costing only 38 gold the total cost to deploy the scouts would be 2736. Now we all know that 3K gold per turn can be reached by turn 6 if a person only devote's their total resources towards it so by turn 6 2 barracks of nothing but scouts would have a total of 144. Now on the next turn lets say the player uses that 3K gold to deploy scouts. he would have 78 scouts deploied. next turn another 79 scouts. Now if they were both deployed in 1 stack that would give them a total of 4710 health and
an attack of 785-1256. So now by turn 8 the player has a hugh stack that will eat up almost any stack and take a beating. So now 2 turns has gone by, but what of the 200 resources that havn't been used like the iron and wood? With the starting market techs a person could get a small profit of 500gold per 200 resources sold. and that alone will provide another 1500 gold to the player that may be used to deploy more troops and corupt the game's market. so now we know that the player would have an easy 200 scouts in a single stack. Now if the player isn't at war then he may spend the extra resources on techs or upgrades on the following turns.

So sure it is economically feesable to have a massive amount of troops by turn 10 more than enough to take out a player's macemen and quickly take your first castle, or at least criple a player's millitary capacity.

But why would a person continue using this production late into the game? By that time there will be players with 5K gold per turn and they may have 4 barracks producing expert or master lvl troops. and with 60 ballista against a 200 pop scout unit the ballistas would deal max dammage(or more in sk games) killing off 33 scouts. So for those who do play such a strat could you fill us in on how you do it and why you do it?

ON a side note I forgot to add the 500 gold from a gold mine.

That might explain why there seems to be such a derth of up and coming skilled players in the game...

What is the best defence against this tactic?

I have used massive amounts of ballista against this tactic and have managed to stay roughly on top. The only problem is using ballista for attack purposes. They are slow and because of this they can easily be out flanked by many masive stacks of scouts.

In a game recently keef0 had 6500 basic troops at about turn 40 i had 900 balista in stacks of about 150 and 1000 mace in stacks of 80 or so 15 turns after our war started keef0 quit i think because the armies he was loosing was on a large scale. he only provided me with a platform to launch my self into a very dominant position.Have a look at game 12.

hmmm...basic troops in later turns sounds very risky to me, i've never been beaten by anyone trying to use basics that late in the game...and i have seen it many of time, they last like 20 turns and i come out w/ about 1000 more kills...its ugly for sure

I'm gonig to say the best tatic against this would be a defense stystem consiting of palistides or walls, towers or outpost (If would can have people can attack from thyere) garrisoned with a few ranged people

I am getting my clocks cleaned because of this tactic, I guess it doesn't pay off to ramp up your gold and build up your military until later in the game..

Going for basic troops is only viable if you can't afford the expert troops, or would like to save cash for techs.

Change your play style or improve your skills silentwar. I've never lost to basic troops - even if I have to come from a position of weakness e.g., just conquered someone elses castle and have a fresh player who has not been at war yet decide to invade (or worse, I don't even own the 2nd castle yet and my former opponent yields his castle for free to my new enemy).

well, I am learning, for sure.. I was trying to spend gold earlier into building my military, so I already have knights, and heavy cavalry, I have expert training, and other techs, but it's no good fighting 12-16 knights agains 200 scouts per army and 180 swordsmen. Hats off to my oponent, too, who's obviously more experienced than I..

Hell, everything is not lost, the battle has only begun..

Well in a scenario where you have knights against scouts, you're losing the rps advantage when defending (however, you take no retaliation when you attack).

Make sure that you're not adding fuel to the flame--in that if you're at a numbers disadvantage, don't put yourself in a attack type disadvantage as well.

Early spending is fine, but it DOES assume that you'll use it before it's no longer any good
That is, you need an early return on your investment

Ive never lost when I use a massive amount of basics but it invites a gangbang on the grounds of the sheer numbers. People will say "we are attacking you jointly with 1500 troops because you have 3500, you outnumber us so this isnt a GB" to which I say Bull, but nonethe less...

Personally I like Balistas. They can hold off alot of Mace since they can usually hit twice before the mace can close in and eat them. Unfortunatly they dont fare well against HC since they cant seem to kill HC very well.
