I personally like to get my military going fast so I build my military academy first, which of course also means you need to research military first too, I think... I then get in a training guild. I also am more of a defensive player so defensive structures are good such as the outpost and then eventually palisades, stone walls, and towers. How bout the rest of you guys?

I go for the military buildings and then as soon as possible get a 3rd barracks going. As soon as the barracks has built I buy for it the advanced melee upgrade and assign the first two troops as archers and squires.

At the end of this I have 3 barracks - a rock barracks, a paper barracks and a scissor barracks.

I build Blacksmith, Training Guild, and Mil. Acad. first. At the very beginning I recruit Archers and Scouts with the recruit bonuses as soon as possible, makes early takeover attempts by others difficult. Once I have the income (slow, to be sure, but taxes, etc. help) I gradually build up to Falcs and Marksmen, then H. Cavalry. Normally by this point I've already taken a neighboring castle thus gaining the extra income, etc. I need, and so on.

i'm with ozkev.3rd barraks asap.it may seem a little redundent later in the game but having a rock/paper/scissers combo on troop devlopment at 1st stops instant takeovers

I would take the tech line. Split between two types of techs - resource techs for production, and mil techs (well, upgrades) to set one barracks up with decent troops (in case of a "sudden vist" )

Resource buildings can't really be upgraded the first time round. Not viable - you need your resources now, not in long term investment. Don't forget to get your scouts and scour the piles, too :-)
If you run across people, use the "Hi, I'm harmless, I'm just hitting piles" line :-)

I always develop one barrack only for melee troops and another only for ranged troops. It's too expensive to develop one barracks for both melee and ranged.
Third barracks will train some commandeers at the start to take over castles then will be melee OR ranged depending of later needs and the type of the map.

I usually start with Taxes tech then Commerce, build Market, tech Military, build Academy and then Tax Reform.
Now i get 3000 gold per turn and start the upgrades for military training. I jump directly to Expert troops if not under attack. It's obvious i don't have enough money at the beginning to buy the troops but Falchioneers are easy to reach this way and easy to buy in later turns (before turn 15)

I would have to agree about the barracks (specialising - ranged or melee) - unfortunately this means I've just given away one of my early weaknesses - having only one type of troop :-)
