I miss battles the way they used to be even more than any other aspect of the game changes. They were ruined completely when moving through one's own troops became possible. No longer could one make a front that could possibly hold long and first strike became death knell. Nobody is battling any more and it is screwed.

The game itself isn't going to change so if we want new action we'll have to change our behavior within the game to achieve this goal. I was thinking about how battles might be made fun again. What if, say, one only moved up one troop per turn to the front? If it didn't die in the exchange, it could stay in the front, or possibly have to move back in the lines to attack again at a different time.

This might allow more tactical thinking to evolve. Would you send your weaker troops up first? Or a maceman to absorb blows?

I personally would want to stick to scenario type games to avoid having the opponent guess a sick strategy that one can't possibly beat. I hate that! I'd also want the fog of war on to hide what is coming next a bit. Anyhow, it would be a whole different experience and I'm up for trying it out if we agree on the rules.

Any takers? Any ideas about rules or variations or names for these kinds of games?

One thing I could say is that if there is going to be such limited amount of movement in a given turn, games are going to need many more turns to be finished

Sure, but far less time per turn as well, remember. Might be quick and fun!

What I was getting at with that was: aren't there limits to the number of turns?

No, you can set how many turns you want when making the game.

Would anyone care to try a new style battle with me? We could even go non-ranked for you chickens out there!

What if you could only move two troops per turn? You could do what you want with them, move, attack, move and attack. It would make tactics vital again. What do you move up first? Do you try to get behind the lines?

Ill do the 1 move per turn with you and no ranking(I suck at this game and specifically battles) I will do as many battles that way as you want or until I gain confidence in my battle abilities, then we can go ranked.

How about we make it even more interesting? No ranged every once in a while?

That sounds good to me. I'll make a battle with about 500 turns. It would be cool if we could do some real time moves, or it is going to take a long time!

I'll message you the password.

We can pick a scenario without any ranged, I think, or just a couple. Ranged are going to be an interesting problem!

So, we each move only one troop per turn, which can include attacking or moving for the second portion of the move. Once a troop is at the front it can remain, but if it attacks, that is the entire turn for that player. Of course, you don't have to move anything at all.

It will be a non ranked, with fog of war to keep the surprise element.

(I got errors trying 500 turns and 400 turns, so I tried 200 turns and that worked. I bet it will be enough, though. If not, at least we'l know!)

Look in "private" battles.

So just to be clear, we move ONE troop per turn? regardless? or only for attacking?

Yes, you can only move any ONE troop per turn. You can do anything you want with it, but only that one teensy lil' fella! I believe I moved a Pikeman on my first turn, but I might be wrong about that.

OK, this is so slow! Maybe we should up it to 3 troops per turn?

We can always just start over, it's just an experiment... what do you say, new game, three troops per turn movement?
