Because of the simultaneous attack possibility I used to keep switching from ingame to *who's online* until I finally realised that the ingame players get listed in the lower right hand corner ingame message block;

So I started relying upon that as a warning;
However, and I'm sure my opponent will accuse me of making another excuse, my units were not responding because they had been destroyed in a simultaneous attack and my opponent's name was not showing listed ingame in the lower right hand corner block:
