I'm sure it used to be you couldn't build within 6 hexes of a unit. But I tried building a barracks 7 hexes away (closest hex of the barracks to the unit) and it said I was too close. Yet, in same campaign I've built smaller buildings 7 hexes away fine.

Best I can determine is that 6 still works for me and I'm inclined to think that you're either counting wrong or missing an obstacle or encounterring a bad hex or some other bug ...
lots of the latter I've come to realise in these Mog made maps.

It is only units that matter, right? I can build close than 6 to enemy buildings?

You should be able to build right next to buildings, but there used to be (not sure if it's still an issue) at/from/between 7:00 to 10:00 a questionable distance (i.e. one can count 6 hexes from the builder in 6 directions hexagonally (i.e. where hexes are not clearly within the hexagon in those vicinities used to be a problem)).

Not sure what the rule is (been gone too long)...I was thinking 5 space clear between...BUT, one interesting change I've noticed, the unknowns or random units have no zoc effect for building.

Might as well mention this while I'm at it, that is, I suspect that with non-medieval characters (because I'm using Barbarians second time), bugs may be more rampant (i.e. e.g. I busted a tribute pile in the PG game as a Barbarian and was still able to move the unit afterward).

Here's an example of where for some reason my Barbarian grunt unit can't move adjacent to the scumbag Demonic unit and I can only refer to the reason as some sort of map bug or character bug: uploadingit.com/file/view/xgh8lngwj3xdhfu3/nogogrunts.JPG

Also in this same scene, I did get fooled thinking I had 6 spaces to allow me to build a palisade, but forgot that it's 6 spaces from the space where the building will be placed (i.e. not including it).

There was no *apostrophe s* after *"scumbag"*, but I do understand and appreciate how you read it that way.
