| Posted : Tuesday, 13 August 2013 - 14:01 I'll explain this again, Req is a programmer. He works with the Australian school system making software. His company uses the system's server, so only Requiem is allowed to access the code for Waronline which is also on there by permission. If it were hosted on a private server what you suggest might just conceivably happen. Perhaps if we were willing to pay for a server he'd allow some open source stuff to be done. Shall we pony up? I'm good for $10/month! |

| Posted : Tuesday, 13 August 2013 - 19:14 Thanks for the vote of confidence rex, but I'm probably no more likely to have the time than Req.
$10/month should easily get you everything you need, so it looks like Mog has agreed to pay for it all on his own . Just look at GoDaddy's or justhost's plans. Although you would want to get an idea of actual bandwidth that this site uses per month, and check the small print of the "unlimited" offers.
There might be a complication in that this site presumably still generates some income for Req, in terms of adverts and memberships. How open source would it go?

| Posted : Tuesday, 13 August 2013 - 19:44 I am willing to pony up cash as well but regardless of what we are willing to do it is requiem's decision at the end. |

I don't know if $10 a month would suffice for the needs of the game. It needs to be a server that allows interaction with players, and there is the bandwidth to think about too. I don't think the really cheap hosting sites are as reliable as we would like either. It's probably moot in any case, I doubt he wants his code getting monkeyed with!
I doubt this site makes Req more than a few dollars a year at this point. |

| Posted : Wednesday, 14 August 2013 - 16:20 What you have to do with a server is usually more than bandwidth problems. It has to allow asp, sql server and so on. Most free stuff just allows views as far as I know. I expect it would cost $50-100/month to run this game, but I don't know that for a fact. I could ask. |

| Posted : Wednesday, 14 August 2013 - 17:08 As with anything you will get what you pay for. The cheaper options might be slower in responding, but the technologies shouldn't be a problem. Even budget hosting normally gives you a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Often they charge a bit more for a Windows server - which will give you ASP. All the hosting options will be virtual servers, but unless you want to pony-up closer to $500 a month then you won't get a dedicated server.
Bandwidth is still something to get a good estimate for, because there could be a lot of passing traffic. And wasn't that the original purpose of this thread? |

| Posted : Wednesday, 14 August 2013 - 21:08 My point is, that even at 1 or 2k active players bandwidth for this site should not be a problem. I believe even low tiered plans work well enough for this. It is not like we have anything bandwidth heavy on the site. The only page that gets close to being bandwidth heavy is the flash map...and even that... |
