Try to fulfill as many of the following objectives as possible:
1) Reduce the advantage that players that have time to come online often have over players that can only log on once/day. (specifically, avoid the 2 turns in a row problem). Ideally, this means that all players have nearly 24 hours after the turn tick to enter their commands, then all commands are executed simultaneously, with the game program figuring out what happens. Players able to view a step-by-step animated replay so they can understand what happened.
2) Easy to use interface for giving orders. (e.g., if you want a unit to attack a specific enemy unit (man-on-man marking), you can just select your unit, then click on the target. The system will move your unit towsrds the enemy unit, changing direction as the target moves.
3) Technically easy to implement (e.g. how do you resolve 2 units trying to be in the same hex at the same time, half way through their move (or even at the end of the move).
4) Ability to give whole formations of units orders to move at the same time, E.g. stay in line formation, move towards enemies right flank. Units impeded by terrain catch up automatically (i.e. give slower units priority for occupying a space if in doubt, as faster units can always catch up with the formation later)
5) Ability to give units (or whole formations) several turns orders in one click (e.g. set distant way points, system works out the best route and moves the unit each turn until it reaches its destination)
Inspiration ideas for ordering interface: Age of Empires; Total War series of games (especially the way you give formations orders). |
