there are numbers in grey areas when moving and little red floating numbers when you hit something. what do they mean?

The numbers in the gray areas represent the number of spaces away from the troop. It is just there to add some extra information for you.

The floating numbers are the amount of damage a troop takes in battle.

No, the numbers in the grey are the number of movement points required to get to that hex by the shortest route, rounded to nearest whole number. It should be rounded up, really, as you can't enter a hex unless you have enough movement points.

E.g. if it takes 9.1 movement points to reach a hex, a spearman cannot move into it.

err, yes. and I was perhaps a little pedantic in my answer.

But being pedantic (precise) can make the difference between winning and losing a battle.
