| Posted : Friday, 6 November 2009 - 21:41 Yes I would be greatly in favour of building roads - the roman army's road building skills helped forge an empire. The Rhine/Danube border was incredibly long, so impossible to station enough troops all along it to defend against any conceivable attack.
But the excellent network of roads allowed the empire to quickly deploy troops from reserve positions to meet a threat.
On the flip side of the coin, the lack of roads outside the border made it difficult for attackers to quickly muster for an attack, so the Romans would get plenty of warning, if they weren't busy fighting each other. |
