I try to answer the questions as best I can. In this case, we're talking about something that is a class of objects, with the item not mattering as much as the intent or idea of the object. Since I'm not being specific, that is a clue.

An electronic devise almost always has a printed circuit board from my experience,which isn't a vast experience.
Electro magnetic usually doesn't have a printed circuit board to my knowledge ,please correct me if im wrong,of course there are exceptions... but I cant make heads or tails out of indecisive answers to definite questions Moggy.

That is a hard one to answer. It either means I have to use conjecture or do a ton of research I just don't want to do.

My conjecture is that this is a more modern item(s) than being from pre-1800. You already know this is usually a metallic item and of course this metal has been worked for many centuries, but I'm not sure if it has been used for this particular purpose for that long.

This is not a guess, but it could be Mogs magic wand it seems to fit the description quite well,it's the extendable type so normally it would fit into a shoe box but when extended it wont fit into a shoebox.
It may be electronic ,if Mog put the batteries in... 2 x AAA type but if there not in there it then wouldn't be electronic.

Since this is a class of objects, like say "lawn tools" or "places with rubies", I can't rule out it being a machine or having moving parts, and it isn't meant as an amusement. A two-fer!
