Now, I attacked a troop (10) of battering rams with 9 marksmen a wounded them 35. An enemy attacked my catapults (10) with 10 heavy cavalry and inflicted wounds of 518,1, killing (if you can "kill" a catapult...) 9 of them. Ok maybe there was a difference in level, range protection, bonus point and whatever, ... But isnt the gap kind a big?
Melee-troops seem to have an advantage against siege-weapons, and range-troops a disadvantage....
Anyone who can explain to a newbe..?

Almost, but not quite. Rams and Cats both have resistance against ranged attacks. Rams, however, are also considered a Mele unit, while Cats are also considered a Ranged unit. So, Rams will take normal damage from mele units, but Cats will take double-damage from mele.
