But people with real fires often have small hand bellows to get them going...

Saves getting ash & smoke in your face by having to blow!

well... nobody else is asking, and I sure haven't a clue. all my possibles are eliminated. but, in the spirit of getting this over with, I'll go with the least eliminated thing I can think of.

is it:

Eli Whitney's cotton gin?

yes, there is wood in it, but the important parts are made of metal.
the only other things on my list to ask were singers first sowing machine (less famous I think), and John Henry's hammer... I'm pretty sure both have non-metal parts too.

but just one question, is it the cotton gin?

It is... Houdini's LOCKPICK!

I almost beshat meself when harold1 said Houdini's Thumbscrews. I decided to not mention that he had the person right because it would have been just too obvious, but what a guess! I am amazed. Just goes to show what an interesting and long-lived game this really is, even more so when played live, since it's faster that way.

Well, honorable mention to harold1 and I'll see you in the next installment of the Mogerator's 20 Questions!

Hmmm, not too sure, however, I have read books about Houdini, perhaps you'll actually have to go (gasp) to the library (that place with "books") and look it up.

Houdini escaped from a jail cell once by having his wife pass him a lockpick with a kiss!
