Outposts are one of the best buildings in the game, if used correctly. If you place an outpost in a far corner of the battlefield, and no enemies pass there, then it is a waste of time and money. HOWEVER, if you can place them, lets say, at the end of a mountain pass, then your rangers can pick off the enemy attackers and then cover an advance. If this or something similar is what you plan to do, then recon is the very first upgrade you should research.

I think there are a handful of more important techs to get before recon... but I will say it's my 1st non-essential tech that I get... basically once I've gotten everything I absolutely need to start off well and don't really have a tech I NEED for that turn, I'll pick up recon and use the outposts as needed.

2pop scouts with visual upgrades can be more useful than outposts, though... your outpost can't advance and continue to look around and unveil the map, whereas your troops can. and the scout has the most movement and can smash piles along the way.

With a much longer visibility range than scouts, outposts are definitely superior for supporting an advance. Nothing more inconvenient than tumbling into an army you didn't know was there.

big deal if you run into an army? that's why you use small scout stacks (1 or 2 pop) for scouting... if another player decides to attack them, it's not gonna really hurt you much...

What this game really needs isn't outposts, it's outhouses! I mean, think of all those troops... horses... it's a mess out there. Bloodspots are nothing!

You'd have to research sanitation and paper products before you could build it.

And Mog goes on another characteristic thread-hijacking spree. I'm surprised he's not arrested for cyberterrorism.

Love my outpost, scouts are good but also lets your opponent know you know and he is over cautious, with the outpost you can strike from nowhere when he doesn't know your coming.

Upgrading your viewing range for outposts does not increase the attack range of your balista, marks, archers or arbs. It's +1 hex to ranged attacks for an outpost no matter what.

got to love the cheap +10/+10 +1 rng for your archers. Always like though alot of wood even with building materials. Only bad thing but otherwise very useful

In the game I find wood's the resource I have too much of, I find myself trading it more often than not.

Darkguy mentions wood. I'm in one game now with hardly any wood. This is where I wish there were more diplomacy, trade and cash transfer possibilities between players...

You can transfer cash and resources from other players - just capture their buildings and "remove" them!
